Learn ways to avoid exposure to these dangerous environmental toxins at home and in the community:
Dioxins
Lead
Mercury
Solvents
Flame Retardant Chemicals
Pesticides
Toxic Molds

We all live in a “toxic soup” surrounded by untested chemicals – most of which we are quite unaware. At times, we might feel confused and disheartened when we stop in the midst of our busy lives to consider the complexity of the issue of dangerous chemical exposure. We ask ourselves: “But, what can I do?"

Here are a few suggested actions that each of us can take to help improve our environment and reduce the risks of environmental toxins in the future.

At Home

  • Educate yourself to make better choices
    • Web sites contain lots of information
    • There are many books on safer choices
    • Read labels
  • Use safer alternative cleaning products (they’re less expensive, too)
  • Dispose of waste responsibly and recycle
  • Eat organic or as low on the food chain as possible
  • Be a responsible consumer – do not purchase products from companies that conduct business in a manner which puts our environment, our health and our children’s future at risk

Locally

  • Express your opinion
  • Write Letters to the Editor
  • Speak out at commission meetings and other forums
  • Consider joining a local political committee
  • Organize your own group
  • Become involved in local environmental groups
  • Register to vote - exercise your right at the ballot box

State/Federal

  • Join an advocacy group
  • Track legislation
  • Track how your representative votes
  • Make your opinion heard to your legislators in writing, email and in person
  • Testify before investigative committees
  • Vote

And, remember “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
